General Turf Installation Questions

Question: How deep must the base be?

Answer: Always try to achieve 2"-4” of base. A lesser base will move over time and cost you time and money.

Question: Which is the best material for base building, road base or DG (decomposed granite)?
Answer: We recommend road base, Class II is the most popular, as the primary base with DG only used to smooth the base to achieve the ultimate finished surface. DG should not be the primary based since it will retain water and is subject to holding foot prints and other indentations. CAst training will cover this in great detail.
Question: Why do I need infill sand and how much infill sand do I need?
Answer: 2+ Pounds of infill sand per square foot is important for a successful and long-lasting project. The infill sand gives the synthetic turf blade support and ballast (weight) which contributes to the following:
  • It helps the fiers to stand up easier and maximize the look of the facility.
  • The weight keeps the turf from forming bubbles during temperature swings
    Question: What is artificial grass?
Answer: A synthetic surface that resembles real sod grass. It can be made to resemble many varieties of real grass out there like: St. Augustine, Bermuda, Marathon, Kentucky Blue Grass, and many others. It is primarily used on sports fields, playgrounds, residential lawns and commercial applications.
Artificial Grass is also commonly called: Fake Grass, Synthetic Turf, and occasionally AstroTurf. It is most commonly installed in areas where grass cannot grow, or in areas where grass maintenance is impossible or undesired.
    Question: What is sand infill?
Answer: Infill is spread down into the turf fibers to help the blades of grass stand up. It also protects the grass backing from ultraviolet rays which could eventually cause damage. Types of infill for synthetic grass include: silica sand, zeolite, wonderfill, and hydrochill.
